Crowley Clan News from Around the World
Loretta Crowley Everingham (Laurie785@yahoo.com): I am researching my Crowley ancestors and hope to be able to contact others who might be related. My great great grandfather was John Albert Crowley from County Cork who came to Australia. I now have his marriage certificate, which lists the following information: John Albert Crowley married Bridget Mary Agnes Noonan (both from County Cork) at St.Francis Church, Melbourne on the 16th December 1857. John's parents were Timothy Crowley and Margaret Murphy. Bridget's parents were Denis Noonan and Judy Clancy Nagle (I have seen later information that has her mothers as Julia McGrath). On John's death certificate (1899 in Melbourne) it states that he came from Tiroonadrummond, but I have found no information on this place name in County Cork. Perhaps there is someone who might be able to head me in the right direction, as I can find nothing on either of their parents or info on them in Ireland.
Allene Dueweke of Kalamazoo, MI (duke-ii@juno.com): My great grandfather, Timothy D. Crowley, was born in Ireland and became a US citizen in 1872 at about age 31; he applied for citizenship in 1868 in St. Louis, MO. He and his wife, Bridget Kelly, lived in St. Louis on 12th St. They had at least three sons, Timothy, Michael and Jeremiah. Only Michael (16) and Jeremiah (13) are listed in the 1880 census. Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis lists burial of children Timothy, Maggie M. (1), Mary E. (3), Michael (0) and a Mary Kenniffee (no age given). I have no idea who Mary Kenniffe might be. Jeremiah married Mary Oebels in 1889 and he died in 1902 at age 39. Can anyone give me any information as to when Timothy emigrated or from where in Ireland? Is there a place in Ireland that I may be able to get more information regarding this couple?
Sally Crowley of Salina, KS (Crowley@informatics.net) I am trying to trace my husband’s ancestry. His grandfather, Daniel J. Crowley, came to the USA in the late 1800’s. He may have been born in November 1867. He married Ellen Sullivan Murphy in 1897. He and his family are in the Bridgeport, CT census in 1900, 1910, and 1920. I am currently searching for his marriage license for his exact date of birth and place and for Ellen’s death certificate to see if he was still alive. We have not found his burial place. We hope to make the journey to Ireland for the 2004 Crowley Clan Gathering, and it would be nice to know more of our heritage before then.
William Crowley of Nokomis, FL: My wife, Fran, and I are planning on going to the gathering in Bantry next year. Our friends, Denis Crowley and his wife, may come with us. We are wondering if you can tell us what the phone number is at the Westlodge Hotel. (See article on lodging in this newsletter)
Patrick C. Crowley of Strathroy, ONT: Hope to see you in Bantry next year.
Jim Crowley of Minneapolis, MN: This is to update you on recent happenings. Father Gregory Baxter has been appointed Chancellor of the Omaha, Nebraska Archdiocese. He is the son of Ronald Baxter and the late Margaret Ellen Crowley of Omaha. And Rear Admiral John Emmett Crowley, Jr. has been named Chief Counsel of the U.S. Coast Guard. He is the son of John Crowley and Mary Margaret Mahoney of St. Paul, MN. Fr Greg Baxter is a second cousin and John Crowley is a nephew. We are all fine here. Mary and I are already making plans for the next clan reunion and expect to take daughters Kathleen, Patricia and Julie with us.
Charles Crowley of Mattapoisett, MA: I was happy to receive the Clan newsletter today and to see that Tom put the clipping I sent him to good use. Perhaps another point of interest might be information on the places named Crowley. I know there’s a city in Louisiana of about 30,000 named Crowley and I was in Fort Worth, TX last year and only time prevented me from visiting Crowley, TX nearby. Maybe a future Clan newsletter could include an appeal for those near Crowleys to research the place’s background and origin. Keep up the good work!
