Crowley DNA Project
The project initially started out in 2005 as a Y-DNA project exclusively (Crowley surnamed males only), but over time developed into much more.
We now enroll both male and female participants.
So, what types of testing can we cater for ?
1) Males who are descended from male Crowleys may complete a Y DNA test, which traces male lineage only. Y DNA does not tend to change very much at all from generation to generation which makes this type of test so reliable. We recommend as a starting point the 37 marker test. This level is specific enough and sensitive enough to define a relationship. More refined testing can be added at any time for an additional fee, but there is usually no need to resubmit a test. See https://www.familytreedna.com/group-project-search?search=Crowley&sType=eq
2) Males who have a female Crowley in his background can select a Family Finder test. Family Finder test is an autosomal DNA test which traces both male and female lines. This is the test which is associated with Ancestry and My Heritage. A male who is a descendent of a female Crowley may also complete an MtDNA test which only traces maternal lineage.
3) Females may complete the Family Finder test which traces both maternal and male lineage or the MtDNA test which traces maternal lineage only. I generally recommend starting with the Family Finder test. The MtDNA can be added later without having to submit a new cheek swab.
