Crowleys in Dublin and County Dublin in the XX Century – Contemporary Biographies

Michael Crowley, Druid Lodge, Killiney, fifth son of the late John Crowley of Ballymore, County Cork, professor of classics.

Born at Glaunareglasia, County Cork in 1849, educated by the Christian Brothers and privately. Graduated as a professional accountant and auditor in the office of John MacDonnell and Company, Dublin, professional accountants and auditors, in which firm he was admitted a partner in 1873; member of the firm of M.Crowley and Company, Dublin, chartered accountants and public auditors, elected member of the Chartered Accountants of Canada in 1885 and elected first Irish member of the Incorporated Society of Accountants and Auditors in the same year.

Named in the Charter as a Member of the Council of Chartered Accountants of Ireland, author of “The Commercial Handbook and Office Assistant” one of the best known series of books published by Effingham Wilson and Company of London for which he was awarded a medal and diploma at the International Competition of Professional Accounts held at Lyons (France) in 1894, also awarded medal and diploma at International Competition of Professional Accountants held in Paris (France) in 1900.

Editor of the “Directory of Limited Companies Registered in Ireland” and is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. He married in 1876, Mary E., granddaughter of John Irwin of Fern Hall, County Roscommon.

Michael O’Keefe Crowley, Druid Lodge, Killiney, third son of Michael Crowley, Druid Lodge, Killiney, County Dublin, chartered accountant and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, and his wife, Mary E, granddaughter of John Irwin of Fern Hall, county Roscommon, born in Dublin in 1882, educated at the Catholic University School, Dublin and University College, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, B.A.

Having first served articles of apprenticeship and obtained first place in the Final Examination of the Chartered Accountants of Ireland, was elected an associate of that body in 1904; a member of the firm of M. Crowley and Company, 16 College Green, Dublin, chartered accountants and public auditors.

John Crowley, Floraville, Howth Road, Clontarf, Dublin, second son of the late John Crowley, Professor of Classics, Ballymore, County Cork; born at Fermoy, County Cork, educated privately. Admitted a solicitor in 1886, served articles with the late Bennet Thompson, solicitor, of Dublin.

Senior member of the firm Crowley and Bolger practising at 50 Lower Sackville Street, Dublin, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland, and a Commissioner for taking Affidavits for the High Court of Justice. Married in 1872, Mary J., daughter of the late James Walsh, of H. M. Customs, Dublin, and has issue one son and six daughters surviving.

Charles James Crowley, Floraville, Howth Road, Clontarf, Dublin, only son of John Crowley, solicitor, born at Dublin in 1881, educated by the Christian Brothers also at Looz in Belgium and Belvedere College, Dublin.

Admitted solicitor in 1905, articled to his father, with who he now practices at 50 Lower Sackville Street, Dublin; is a member of the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland.
